If you are looking for the best resource going on writing mystery, suspense and crime novels, then look no further.
Bestselling mystery writer, Hallie Ephron, knows her way around this genre. Growing up in a family of Hollywood screenwriters (and yes, she is the sister of the late Nora Ephron) Hallie is well-known for her suburban thrillers. This chick is the real-deal. And she’s paying it forward with this book.
Writing & Selling Your Mystery Novel, 2nd Edition by Hallie Ephron. Writer’s Digest Books, 2017. 298 pages.
In this revised, expanded resource, Ephron covers everything from identifying and riffing on ideas, to pitching to agents or self-pubbing.
This book covers four main areas for the aspiring mystery writer: planning, writing, revising, and publishing. Within each major part, numerous chapters instruct and coach one through the key facets of each endeavor.
This book covers the structural ins and outs of novel writing as well as specific genre-related writing techniques.
Ephron teaches in a down-to-earth voice, and also illustrates her instruction by way of many examples from popular novels.
This is exceedingly helpful as one can more easily grasp a concept by seeing it executed well and in action.
Also, most of us who are serious about our craft have read writing reference books that encourage the reading writer to complete exercises within the text. I’m always reticent to do so in the book, as I don’t want to ruin the pages in case I wish to use them in the future.
I was delighted to find out that this text offers the additional resource of a specific Writer’s Digest link to all the exercises/worksheets that are printer-ready and friendly.
I was very excited to be able to keep the text pristine and yet scrawl and scratch away on my current work in progress.
This resource is spot-on for any writer at any level–from the noobie to the MFA.
Defintely a five fox rating for this fab writer’s reference book.
